Liza Laughlin

Prior to joining Sperling & Slater, P.C., Ms. Laughlin was a litigation associate at McDermott Will & Emery, LLP. Ms. Laughlin regularly handles all facets of litigation in both state and federal courts, including: (1) drafting pleadings, discovery, and substantive motions and briefs, such as motions to dismiss, motions for summary judgment, and oppositions to class certification; (2) first-chairing depositions of individuals, corporate representatives, named plaintiffs in class actions, and expert witnesses; (3) conducting legal research on complex legal issues, and using research to find creative solutions for clients; (4) handling complicated discovery and e-discovery matters in cost-effective manner, and working cooperatively with opposing counsel to resolve discovery disputes; (5) overseeing the work of other associates, teams of staff and contract attorneys, and outside vendors; and (6) representing clients in mediation, and negotiating favorable settlements for clients.

Ms. Laughlin has represented businesses and individuals in a variety of disputes, including those involving breach of contract, enforcement of noncompetition provisions, declaratory judgment, consumer fraud, negligence, and environmental issues. Her representative experience includes: (1) defending an agricultural products manufacturer in multimillion dollar class action litigation against cities, villages, and water companies that sued because the manufacturer’s product was present in the surface water; (2) defending a group of healthcare insurers in high-profile class action litigation against healthcare providers that sued over the insurers’ reimbursement rates and practices; and (3) representing a local meat manufacturer in an action for breach of contract, injunctive relief, and declaratory judgment.

Ms. Laughlin’s experience also includes teaching trial advocacy courses to law students, and instructing them on how to compose and deliver compelling statements and examinations, lay the requisite foundation for evidence, and effectively handle exhibits at trial.
